3 credits This course is A hands-on study of A new kind of cultural institution: the "constructivist museum," whichpreserves history while it generates values and behaviors that restore human community. Course content is interdisciplinary, integrating African-American history, organizational dynamics, maritime history, and educational methods. A 24-hour overnight experience living aboard the ship includes interviews with experts, environmental education labs, sailing and navigation, and will involve instruction by the Ernestina's educators. Note: This course is open to Master's and Bachelor's students. Non-credit option also available. Usually offered fall semester.

3 credits Explores the important relationships between mothers and daughters, and fathers and sons. Using the lenses of literature, memoir, and psychology, students study novels, poetry, and drama from A comparative perspective. Usually offered fall semester.

3 credits Compares the Native American view, which sees human beings as A part of nature, with the dominant cultural view which places men above and in control of the natural world by reading from the Native American oral tradition, including folk tales and poetry, Thoreau, Emerson, Whitman, Faulkner, and Leslie Silko's Ceremony. Usually offered spring semester.

3 credits Examines selected literary masterpieces that have been made into films. Involves the study of both the texts and the film versions in order to understand the aesthetic elements of each genre, and the differences between the two forms. Inquiry covers the historical context of each work, as well as issues of race, class, and gender. Note: The particular works covered will be determined by the instructor.

3 credits This course studies works of literature by world authors listed in the Massachusetts Frameworks for Language Arts. The course presents writers from different continents as A group, encouraging more in-depth comparison and analysis. The course also presents these works within A discussion of three literary critical strands: post colonial criticism, feminist criticism, and literature of culture and place.
