They study their own cultural identity; read and discuss A range of theological and political writing about gender, religion, and race; and use historical and contemporary examples to test their ideas and concepts. 3 credits This course provides an overview of theories of addiction. Addiction will be examined in the context of race, gender, sexual orientation, and class. Students will be introduced to methods of identification, diagnosis, intervention, and referral of substance abusers in A variety of settings. Students will also have an opportunity to visit addiction treatment facilities. Usually offered fall semester.

6 credits Provides field experience in A variety of human service settings as well as the opportunity to share seminar issues with other students in A small group environment. 6 credits This course provides additional experience in A human services setting providing the student with individual and/or small group support. Students learn through shadowing, direct interaction with clients, agency employees, and taking responsibility for journals, report writing, and A self-designed research project. Students should complete AHMSR 4700 prior to enrollment in This course.

3 credits Students will learn how to deal with the professional and ethical issues related to the practice of counseling and related helping professions. Students will explore and apply ethical codes to current controversies within the field of human services. Case studies, films, field visits, simulations, and role-playing will be employed in helping students grasp the integration of theory and practice in the area of applied professional ethics. Usually offered spring semester.

3 credits Provides an overview of the historical, cultural, political, and legal issues in domestic violence. An overview of strategies and theories in prevention will be addressed through identification of risk behaviors. Custody, mandated treatment, probation, restraining orders, court advocacy, and social and behavioral models of violence will be introduced. Assessment and treatment models, including harm reduction, will be presented and applied in case studies. Usually offered fall semester.
