Students move from theoretical understanding of the helping relationship to practical application as they practice interviewing, counseling, and referral processes. Specialized counseling skills such as crisis intervention introduced. Extensive demonstration and role play utilizing audio and video tapes. Provides students with field work in competency training and skill building through directed, closely-supervised involvement in a human service agency. Students practice their acquired skills through professionally supervised individual and/or group focused involvement. The course covers seven major steps in decision-making: commitment to planning, self-assessment, generating options, information seeking, choosing, planning, and taking action. Designed to assist incoming students make a successful transition from high school, home, or the workplace to college. Adopts a seminar approach requiring students to use a textbook, listen to lectures, participate in discussions, and complete a variety of written and oral assignments. Adjustment and transition issues-academic, career, and interpersonal-are addressed with a structured, content-based curriculum, flexible enough to promote the exploration and resolution of individual concerns.
