Fundamentals of financial planning are presented to prepare students to make informed choices related to spending, saving, borrowing, and investing that lead to long-term financial security. Students learn to identify and evaluate choices as well as understand the consequences of their decision. Topics include the management of personal and family finances, budgeting, consumer buying, personal credit, savings and investment, home ownership, insurance and retirement planning. Designed to acquaint the student with the federal income tax system. Emphasis is on the basic concepts of income recognition, deductible business and nonbusiness expenses, and special tax calculations. A practicum in income tax preparation.The course provides training in tax preparation procedures and prepares the student for theVITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) course examination. Upon successful completion of theVITA exam, the student performs community service in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service and the Massachusetts Department of Revenue by filling out federal and state income tax returns for area residents.The students contract with the instructor to earn from one to three credits.
