Fall Semester An introductory, interdisciplinary survey of women’s lives in various areas such as work, family, sexuality, religion and politics. A study of the diversity and commonalities of women’s experiences, actions, and contributions across time and cultures. A review of major institutions and their views and treatment of women. A consideration of the changes and choices in women’s lives resulting from the contemporary women’s movement, as well as the major problems which still remain. Students will learn how their lives connect with the lives of women around them. This course meets the international/multicultural requirement. Prerequisite: ENG 1280 or 1290.

Offered Periodically Women are the majority of caregivers and patients in the current health care system. This course will discuss the various forces – historical, political, sociological, economic, biological, and psychological – that create and maintain women’s utilizationof, and service to, the American health care system. Among the topics to be investigated are sexism in health care, health and safety for women in the workplace, socialization of females as patients and health workers, nurses’ efforts to gain autonomy, and some women’s health issues. (Same course as SOC 2230, NSG 2230). Prerequisite: SOC 1000 or 1600 or permission of instructor.

Every other year Alternating Fall Semesters Fall 2008 Discusses human sexuality in an integrated way, exploring biological, psychological, social, and political aspects. (Same course as BIOL 2450, PSY 2450). Prerequisite: One course in science or biology and one course in psychology, or permission of instructor.

Alternating Spring Semesters Spring 2006 Examines biological and sociological research on sex and gender. Two main questions will be studied: 1) Biology is destiny: scientific fact or sociocultural bias? 2) How are men and women similar and/or different, and what are the origins of these similarities and differences? (Same course as BIOL 2452, SOC 2452). Prerequisite: SOC 1000 or SOC 1600 and SCI 1010, or SCI 1020, or one course in biology, or permission of instructor.

Spring Semester This seminar will encourage students to reflect upon and synthesize concepts and experiences from their work as Women’s Studies minors. The specific content selections depend on the professor’s area of expertise. However, all seminars will include the following: reflections on the totality of the student’s study of the women’s studies literature; reflections on how the women’sstudies literature has been integrated into the student’s academic program; and reflections on how the women’s studies literature relates to and has application to the student’s life. Prerequisites: WS 2000 and at least two other courses toward the Women’s Studies minor.
