Fall and Spring Semesters Focuses on basic methods of handbuilding and wheel-throwing in clay. Students construct container forms employing the fundamentals of design and decoration in clay. Fee.

Offered Periodically This course explores and focuses on making unique artist’s books. Beginning with simple structures, students will learn to construct traditional and non-traditional book forms using images and text. Through creating one one-of-a-kind books, students will address concept, design and technique. Slides of work by contemporary book artists will provide an understanding of the many ways in which ideas can be presented in this form. Students are expected to purchase supplies. Prerequisite: VA 1770.

An introduction to the art and science of Landscape Architecture including an overview of the history of man’s design on the land, the basic elements of design as applied to the landscape, materials in the landscape, and varieties of landscape architecture practice. The course includes readings, writing, aphotographic project, and a site design project.

Alternate Years The aim of this course is to provide the student with an understanding of the current art scene through an exposure to the many styles and ideas that have emerged since the 1950’s.Through field trips to museums and galleries and visits from professionals in the Boston area, students will study contemporary artists from many parts of the world. The emphasis will be on learning to appreciate the work aesthetically as well as examine how it fits into a cultural, political, historical and biographical context. A second aim of the course is to expose the student to representative examples of current critical thought. This course satisfies the international/multicultural requirement. Prerequisite: FA 1000.

Offered Periodically The course studies the ritualistic dance masks and sculpture of North American and African tribes and their influence on contemporary visual ideas. The study also addresses the spiritual, social, and functional aspects of art in these cultures. When possible, the class will take a field trip to a Boston area museum or event. This course satisfies the international/multicultural requirement. Pre- or Corequisite: FA 1000.

This course introduces the art of portraiture using two and three dimensional media. The study of anatomical structures accompanies instruction in composition and lighting, accessories, and costume. The portrait will be explored using a very broad definition, including traditional and contemporary approaches to human, animal and imaginary subjects. Prerequisites: VA 1770, VA 1800 and 2000-level VA studio course.

This course introduces the art of the landscape using varied media: painting, drawing, collage, and others. The course takes students through the beginning process of choosing specific locations and responding to them using both traditional representational techniques and more contemporary methods of expression. Prerequisites: VA 1770, VA 1800 and 2000-level VA studio course.

Spring Semester Designed for the visual artist and designer, this course introduces the techniques and materials used in the professional presentation of fine art, graphic design and desktop publishing. Students will learn the many options available to them and apply the skills to sequencing, matting, mounting, framing, photographing, and digitizing artwork for exhibition and presentation purposes. Special attention will be paid to archival considerations, precision, and to the resources though which materials can be acquired. A final portfolio of work will appear in the Student Art Exhibition at semester’s end. Students are expected to purchase supplies. (Same course as GD 3300). Prerequisite: VA 3950 and senior standing.
