SOC 3640: Deviance and Social Control

Fall and Spring Semesters Examines forms of deviance, sociological theories to account for them, and their role in social control. Deviance will also be viewed in relation to social norms and change and as a social control mechanism designed to promote social conformity. Special attention will be given to the importance of deviance and social control theory and their influence on criminal justice theories about crime and criminal behavior. (Same course as CJ 3640). Prerequisites: Any 2000-level Sociology or Criminal Justice course.

Course reviews the major theorists and some of the current theoretical controversies that have marked the modern history of sociological theorizing, with the goal of integrating theory, research, and practice.
