This course will examine the history of African Americans in the United States from 1776 to the present. The approach will be topical within a chronological framework. With emphasis on the 20th century, primary attention will be given to the interaction between social, economic and educational mechanisms created by Whites to govern race relations in this country an on efforts by Blacks to accommodate with, modify and/or abolish these mechanisms. The course will also consider African/Black American efforts to develop alternative social, cultural and religious institutions within American society. Topics will include: enslavement of black Americans; African Americans in the Revolutionary Era; the Civil War and Reconstruction; early 20th century Black ideologies and leadership; early and modern Civil Rights organizations; Civil Rights at the crossroads; affirmative actions. Boston has been a prominent place throughout the African American story, and the Boston experience — people, places and events will be cited and studied. (Same course as AFAM 2330). This course meets the international/multicultural requirement.

Alternate Fall Semesters Next: Fall 2008 An examination of the powers, duties and operation of the American Presidency. Special attention is given to the political environment in which the President operates as well as to how the abuse of Presidential authority can be prevented.

A behavioral study of the American Congress considering such factors as the process of election, relations with the executive, the influence of pressure groups, and the operation of the committee system. Attention is also given to the unique qualities of the House and Senate.

Alternate Fall Semesters Next: Fall 2008 Considers the influence of the nomination and election of presidential candidates, the role of the major parties, and the impact of interest groups on the political process. Proposals for reforming the political process are also examined.

This course will look at the history of immigration in the U.S., surveying the impact of immigration on both the immigrant Catalog 2007-08 153 and the receiving society. In this way the course will provide some background to and understanding of current immigration issues in the U.S., including ethnicity, race, citizenship, deportation and exclusion laws, and xenophobia. Materials for the course will include primary sources and analytical essays.

Alternate Spring Semesters Next: Spring 2008 Analyzes recent cases in American constitutional law. Topical issues are researched and oral arguments are presented. Prerequisite: P&H 1060, or permission of instructor.

Alternate Spring Semesters Next: Spring 2008 Examines the practice of deception in recent national administrations. The implications of Watergate are considered. Abuses by sensitive agencies such as the C.I.A. are also explored.

Fall Semester An examination of current issues in gay politics, including gay marriage, gays in the military, gays in elective and appointive office, and the influence of the media on gay issues.

This course is designed to give students a multidisciplinary introduction and survey of African American Studies in preparation for courses within the minor. Students will consider the African American experience from economic, social, historical, racial, cultural, national, and global perspectives. (Same course as AFAM 2450).

Emphasizing your ability to influence state and local policies, through analysis of issues like education, criminal justice, public welfare, healthcare, homeland security and business development.
