Offered Periodically Provides an historical perspective for contemporary minority problems. Specific attention is given to social thought and current social conditions which operate to perpetuate minority group oppression. Analysis of social movements aimed at overcoming oppression is included. (Same course as SOC 2670). This course meets the international/multicultural requirement. Prerequisite: Any 1000-level Sociology course.

Spring Semester Introduces African American subjects in popular film, beginning with such early directors as Oscar Micheaux, continuing through 1970s blaxploitation films and up to contemporary filmmakers such as Spike Lee and John Singleton. Students will investigate the construction of black identity and the depiction of black life on screen, as well as examine independent films versus mainstream Hollywood productions to consider how such films uphold and/ or critique conventional racial stereotypes. (Same course as ENG 2890). Prerequisite: Six (6) credits of English at the 1000-level.
