This field experience is allows students to apply concepts of curriculum development to lesson planning and implementation. Equates to nine months of work experience toward Office for Child Care Services Teacher qualifications. Prerequisite: ED 2540, ED 2342 OR ED 2344; ED 2450. Co-requisite: ED 3115.

    Fall Semester Students interested in seeking licensure in special education will complete a supervised field experience in the fall semester of their fourth year of study. The field experience will be 2 full days per week in an approved setting and will take place in conjunction with ED 3415. Prerequisites: ED 3190, ED 3197. Corequisite: ED 3415.

    Fall Semester This course will engage students in discussion and readings that explore effective leadership qualities for professionals who work in community-based education programs. It draws upon the disciplines of psychology, sociology and education in understanding the factors that contribute to sound community basedinitiatives that support the health and welfare of children and youth. Through direct interaction with service providers, students will gain a deeper understanding of how organizations meet the diverse needs of their communities. Topics include, but are not limited to, identifying community needs, working collaboratively with related service organizations, advocacy issues, and how to promote purposeful change. Prerequisites:ED 2420, ED 2600.

    This seminar course will explore the transference of tolerance to others by examining the cultural and educational values that predominated during various turbulent times in U.S. history and discovering how current society continues to propagate these intolerances. Prerequisites: SOC 1000/1600 and ED 2162.

    Fall Semester This course addresses speech-language communication disorders in children. Review of typical development of speechlanguage and communication, as well as a typical development and its consequences in terms psychosocial and cognitive growth. Formal and informal assessment tools, remediation and support strategies are stressed. Supports and considerations of curricular modifications in the classroon environment for the student for the speech-language or communication disorder are closely examined. Augmentative and alternative communiation systems will be explored throughout the course. Prerequisite: ED 3190.

    Offered Periodically This course is designed to further integrate the theoretical and practical in the content areas of reading, language, and math for the special needs child. Special emphasis is placed upon handling the behaviorally disordered within a special group setting. Prerequisite: ED 3400, ED 3455.

    Fall Semester This course provides students with theory and methodology in the teaching of reading. Individual differences (including, but not limited to, language and cultural differences) are an ongoing component of all assessment and instructional practices. A required field lab is an integral part of this course. Prerequisites: ED 2410 or ED 2550; ED 2600. Corequisite: ED 3195.

    In this course students will focus on topics related to creating overall effective learning environments. Topics include behavior and classroom management concepts and practice; specific curriculum issues; adaptation and accommodation of general education curriculum and IEP study. Prerequisite: ED 3190.

    Spring Semester This course will explore multiple perspectives on current issues and trends in education, the impact of these issues and trends have one children and their development, and the role of education in promoting healthy development for all children. The course will link educational trends to current events in order to examine the issues contributing to the role of education in our communities and our nation. There is an emphasis on the diverse and complex needs of children and whether or not these needs are being addressed through current education practices. Prerequisites: 2.5 cumulative average/no outstanding incompletes: ED 3115 or ED 3198 or ED 3510.
