Offered Periodically Studies dance design through symmetrical and asymmetrical combinations of jumps, turns, balances, floor patterns, and improvisations in modern dance style. Prerequisite: Any 1000-or 2000-level DANC course or permission of instructor.

Fall Semester Presents to students with some previous dance training the opportunity to establish, develop, and refine classical ballet techniques. An awareness of the relation of muscle control to technique is used to intensify the effectiveness of training. Students will be required to have or purchase appropriate dancewear and ballet shoes. Prerequisite: DANC 1010 or permission of instructor.

Spring Semester Continues the development of techniques presented in Classical Ballet I. Students will be required to have or purchase appropriate dancewear and ballet shoes. Prerequisite: DANC 2050 or permission of instructor.

Spring Semester Studies the elements of movement (shape, weight, time, space, and dynamics) and discovers how these can be used abstractly to express ideas and emotions in dance. Students are required to create a final movement study or short dance for completion of the course. Students will be required to have or purchase jazz shoes or ballet shoes. This class enables students to make the transition from classroom to stage using the technical skills acquired in dance classes. Working individually or in groups, students develop and rehearse dance compostitions presented in an end-of-semester dance performance. The purchase of some costume components may be required. Corequisite: Any other DANC course.

Offered Periodically This course provides an overview of educational settings and exposes students to the variety of options available within the teaching profession. Emphasis will be placed on providing opportunities for students to explore personal and professional choices in order to make informed career decisions.

Explores the meaning of “inclusive community” in educationalsettings where individuals develop a positive environment based on mutual respect that promotes affirmative human growth and learning. Offers authentic opportunites to examine, reflect upon, and “do democracy,” that is, to fashion small groups thatform around 1) group decision-making, cooperation, and commitments 2) caring for the common good, and 3) exploring and valuing diversity. This course meets the international/multicultural requirement. (Same course as SOC 2150).

Fall and Spring Semesters This course applies psychological concepts to the context of learning and teaching and the welfare of children in classrooms. Topics include: cognitive development, learning styles, factors affecting children’s achievement, intelligence and creativity, instructional design, evaluation, classroom management, and the relationship of teacher and student. Prerequisite: PSY 1400.

Fall Semester In this course, students study the relationship between school and society in historical and contemporary contexts. Issues such as class, ethnicity, gender, and culture will be explored as well as ways in which educators have responded to them. Students will also study schools as workplaces and as environments for socialization, social control and social change. (Same course as SOC 2162). This course meets the international/multicultural requirement. Prerequisites: SOC 1000 or 1600.
