[ ss ] LING 131a or equivalent is recommended. See Course Catalog for Special Notes Topic for Fall 2009: Corpus Linguistics. The rapid progress made in the field of Natural Language Processing in recent years is due to two main factors. One is the use of statistical and machine learning approaches, and the other is the large quantity of electronic linguistic data that is readily available from the Internet. When enhanced with human linguistic analysis, this data provides the fuel for machine learning approaches. The main objectives of the course are 1) to develop a thorough understanding of designing principles, linguistic models, annotation procedures, and evaluation methods for linguistically annotated corpora, and 2) to provide an in-depth examination of the major linguistic annotation projects that have shaped the field of Natural Language Processing. Instructor's Signature Required
