Survey of the evolution of formal social theatre from ritual origins through the Renaissance. A social history of dramatic theory, plays and playwrights, production practices and performance styles, emphasizing their roles as both product of and mirror to changing values, tastes, attitudes and customs. May not receive credit for both THEA 220 and 300. Three hours per week with enhancement. Meets General Education IIIA or IIIC (Prior to Fall 2008: IB).

Surveys Western theatre from the Elizabethan period to the present. Examines the influence of non-Western forms and developing aesthetics of Early Modern drama. Connects the diverse social, political and philosophical forces which shape the theatre as an expression of the modern world. May not receive credit for both THEA 319 and 301. Prerequisite: THEA 300. Three hours per week with enhancement.

Examines scene design through concept, metaphor, vision, creativity, color and design theories, and 20th century history. Develops drafting, figure drawing, scene painting, model making and production team communication skills. May not receive credit for both THEA 328 and 310. Prerequisite: THEA 110, 210. Focuses on the process, techniques, analysis and practice of scene painting and scenic art for the stage and other performance and display spaces. Examines interpretation and decision making in the collaborative process between the scenic artist and designers and craftsmen. Prerequisite: THEA 110, 126, 210. Examines the elements of design, character study, textual analysis and directional concepts as a basis for translating conceptualizations into costume renderings. Includes period research and contemporary designers in the world of fashion and theatre. May not receive credit for both THEA 323 and 320. Prerequisite: THEA 110 or permission of instructor. Three hours per week with enhancement.

Covers the philosophy and uses of Readers' Theatre. Emphasis on the analysis, adaptation and staging of nondramatic literature within the context of this art form. Lecture/workshop format will be employed. May not receive credit for both THEA 325 and 327. Prerequisite: THEA 150, 240 and 300, or permission of instructor. Three hours per week with enhancement.

Study of the theory and basic principles, skills and techniques underlying direction. Student-directed theatre production required. May not receive credit for both THEA 324 and 344. Prerequisite: 150, 240, 300 or permission of instructor. Three hours per week with enhancement.

Provides experience training for intermediate and advanced acting through the exploration of improvisational techniques, character analysis, scene work and exercises in acting style. May not receive credit for both THEA 326 and 350 Prerequisite: THEA 150. Three hours per week with enhancement.
