The course provides students with a review of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology. Emphasis will be placed on an in depth study of basic surgical interventions, including endoscopic surgery; general surgery; obstetric and gynecologic; otorhinolaryngologic, genitourinary; orthopedic; ophthalmic; oral and maxillofacial; plastic and reconstructive; cardiothoracic and peripheral vascular, and neurosurgery. Prerequisite: Acceptance to ST program. Contact hours: 103
  • 3.00 Credits

(intermediate and advanced surgical interventions) The course is intended to provide senior students with a review of anatomy and an introductory and intermediate depth overview of specific surgical procedures associated with each of the following ten surgical specialties (cardio thoracic, general/pediatrics, genitor urinary, gynecology, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, orthopedics, peripheral vascular and plastic/dental/reconstructive). Students attend informal classes, pursue independent studies, complete service specific study guides and submit daily "case prep" papers. Additionally, senior students participate in the peri operative rotation, and submit a written narrative of their experience. Prerequisite: Successful completion of first semester. 137 hours total.
  • 3.00 Credits

This course is designed to provide the fundamentals of welding for the beginner. Students will learn to operate basic equipment pertaining to shielded metal arc welding, oxy fuel welding and cutting. Students will also be instructed in the choice of proper electrodes. This course will be beneficial to students going into a welding career or any occupation that requires welding skills. It will also be valuable to welders as refresher or to the home hobbyist or a supervision advancement.
  • 4.00 Credits

This course is designed to provide the theory of shielded metal arc welding, oxy fuel usage. Topics the students will cover include shop safety, welding equipment, terminology, striking the arc, metallurgy, critical temperatures, quality control, welding distortion and defects, blue print reading for welders, joint design, and weld symbols. The student will be introduced to codes and standards, API, ASME, Maine State and AWS standards I.A.W. AWS D1.1. This course is designed to prepare the student for various certification requirements with an emphasis on preparation for welder certification testing. Pre requisite: MAT 020; Co requisite: WEL 121.
  • 3.00 Credits

This laboratory component is intended to provide students with experiential learning in support of concepts and principles introduced in the lecture class. Students will be trained in basic shielded metal arc welding, including F 3 and F 4 filler stringer beads, pad weld, filet weld, all position and oxy fuel basic including torch safety, oxy cutting, brazing, soldering. Class: 12 hour lab weekly. Prerequisite: MAT 020; Co requisite: WEL 120.
  • 4.00 Credits

Students will learn about and explore the principles of carbon arc and plasma arc cutting, welding of carbon steels, alloys of aluminum and stainless using shielded metal arc welding, flux core arc welding, gas metal arc welding, and gas tungsten arc welding to prepare for the eve changing welding environment. Prerequisites: WEL 120, WEL 121 Co requisite: WEL 131
  • 3.00 Credits

This laboratory component is intended to provide students with experiential learning in support of concepts and principles introduced in the lecture class. Topics include certificate preparation in groove welding to AWS D1.1 in shielded metal arc welding, flux core arc welding, and metal cored arc welding. Students will also perform basic alloy welding (stringer beads, pad welds, filet weld), advanced carbon arc cutting, plasma arc cutting, gas tungsten arc welding / tig (stringer beads, filet welds, walking the cup). Exposure to piping, sockets, the open root and more. Class: 12 hour lab weekly. Prerequisites: WEL 120, WEL 121 Co requisite: WEL 130.
