This course will examine the roots of the cultural values in American life and how these values affect decision making on social, political, and personal moral issues. The course will survey the major philosophical thought of Western civilization focusing on ethics and how they are derived from metaphysical as well as social and political philosophy. Students will be assigned readings that deal both with ethical theory and ethics in practice. Two works of literature, one ancient and one modern, will also be assigned and analyzed in terms of the ethical issues they raise.

This course is a survey of ethical and cultural ideals beginning from the ancient world to the present with an emphasis upon the notions of justice and virtue that have shaped western sensibilities. By reference to a wide range of excerpted readings, the course will reveal links among the disciplines of philosophy, history, literature, and anthropology. Prerequisite(s): PHI 101 or PHI 107

This course will provide a basic introduction into all aspects of pharmacy practice in both community and institutional settings. Topics will include: medication dosage forms, routes of administration, abbreviations, pharmacy calculations, pharmacy law, interpreting medication orders, drug classification, pharmacologic actions, drug information resources, compounding, medication errors, and institutional, ambulatory and home care pharmacy practice.

The goal of this course is to provide hands on experience in a pharmacy laboratory on the SMCC campus. Students will learn to interpret and fill prescriptions involving oral medications, intravenous therapy and the compounding of liquids, creams, ointments and suppositories. Near the end of the course students will be placed in a working environment that will augment their prior work experience and introduce them to a new work environment under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Prerequisite(s): PHM 100.

Students will use basic algebra to calculate dosage and dosage rates used by technicians to compound prescriptions and to prepare intravenous solutions, pediatric doses or special prescriptions. Prerequisite(s): MAT 115.

This seminar course will cover medical terminology and law in the practice of pharmacy. Students will be responsible for learning both state and federal laws that govern the practice of pharmacy in the state of Maine. Topics of discussion will include: liability, interpreting medication orders, drug information resources, compounding, medication errors, and institutional, ambulatory and home care pharmacy practice. Prerequisite(s): PHM 100.

This course will provide a comprehensive review of pharmacology over two semesters. All aspects of pharmacology will be presented including drug mechanism, pharmacokinetics, drug biotransformation and a disease based review of several different therapeutic classes of drugs. Prerequisite(s): BIO 132; BIO 133.

This course will focus on the medications, health and beauty aids and medical supplies that have been approved for sale without a prescription. Emphasis will be placed on the mechanism of action of the active ingredients and instructions for use.

Student will pick a subject of interest for independent study. The topics may include a disease or therapy, a class of medications, an aspect of pharmacy law, an area of research, a specific institution or clinic, dosage forms, delivery systems, advances in computer technology, etc.
