    What is the Golden Ratio and how do artists and scientists use it This interdisciplinary course is a survey of geometrical topics in mathematics and our world, focusing on problem solving and the connections between mathematics and culture. For example, is our social order influenced by mathematics or spatial awareness A selection of introductory topics will be covered from among these: mathematics and social satire, art, and geometry - including plane and solid geometry; ruler and compass constructions; symmetries in two and three dimensions, and more. The course format will emphasize student exploration and critical thinking. Students will be required to demonstrate an understanding of the material through journal writing and reports. A mathematics text and a novel will be used to introduce concepts and related themes. Prerequisite: ENG 080 and ENG 090 and MAT 050 or equivalent or placement test

    This course is designed to develop the necessary skills to produce quality professional and academic documents. Students will learn the practice and theory of word processing skills in Microsoft Word. Concepts learned include text, paragraph and page level formatting features, headers and footers, footnotes and endnotes, mail merging, inserting and manipulating graphics, columns, tables, templates, styles, outlines, indices, tables of contents, tracking changes and document comparisons.

    This course provides a comprehensive study of the basic skills needed to manage, maintain and operate microcomputer hardware and software. The majority of the course includes an overview to a graphical user interface and an integrated software applications package, including information management programs such as word processing, electronic spreadsheets and presentation graphics that will be used to develop practical problem solving skills at the entry level. Topics include an overview of the components of a microcomputer system; hardware and software; storage devices and media; interpretation of error messages; a computer literate vocabulary and the uses of the computer.

    This course is designed to be a hands on learning experience. Its intent is to familiarize students with the Internet as a research tool. Students will learn how to navigate the Internet to find resources and supplements to support both educational and professional research. Students will learn how to create their own web site using Microsoft FrontPage.

    The purpose of this course is to familiarize students with electronic spreadsheet development using Microsoft Excel. In this intensive hands on course, students will create various types of worksheets for personal and professional uses. Emphasis will be placed on problem solving and developing quality worksheets using concepts and techniques found in most spreadsheet software. This course covers all basic skills and techniques and several advanced topics including how to design and print graphs and charts; develop worksheets for "what if", "goal seek" and "sensitivity" analysis; generate reports; use mathematical, financial, statistical, logical as well as date and time functions; generate reports; use database operations; and develop and use macros. Prerequisites: MAT 020, ENG

    The housekeeping department is the largest single department in most hotels. This course gives students a well rounded knowledge in the exceptionally important area of housekeeping and how it is related to hotel, motel, and restaurant operations. Safety and security, managing inventories, guest room and public area cleaning, linens, and controlling expenses will all be covered in depth. Co requisite(s): LRM 132.

    In this lab the student intern will become familiar with efficient and effective techniques for cleaning hotel rooms and public areas of a hotel or restaurant. The safe use of cleaning supplies and chemicals is stressed along with customer comfort, safety and key control security. Laundry cleaning procedures and linen control will also be covered. Students are required to be in uniform as lab dictates. Tools will be provided by SMCC. Class: 4 lab hours. Co requisite(s): LRM 131.

    This course deals with the center of operations from the guest's perspective the front office. Operations, reservations, registration, accounting, and the night audit will be stressed. The special areas of guest service and up selling will be discussed. Co requisite(s): LRM 134.

    This lab will provide the skills necessary to ensure customer satisfaction, safety and security. Guest registration, check out procedures, key control and phone manners will be a focus. This lab will require evening, over night and weekend hours. Students are required to be in uniform as lab dictates. Tools will be provided by SMCC. Class: 4 lab hours. Co requisite(s): LRM 133.
