This course is designed to give second year Allied Health students an introduction to the study of disease, both congenital and acquired. Emphasis is placed on providing students with an understanding of alterations and derangement of normal physiology as manifest by signs, symptoms, physical and laboratory findings. Prerequisites: BIO 132 and BIO 133.

This course is designed to introduce students to major groups of marine algae that are found along the North Atlantic shore. Emphasis will be placed on the methods of study, taxonomy, morphology, zonation, and physiology of principal groups of algae. Prerequisites: BIO 111 or BIO 124 and BIO 125.

This course familiarizes students with basic concepts and techniques used in the fisheries field. In addition to an overview of ichthyology, emphasis is placed on taxonomy, biology and life histories of selected species, research methods, management strategies and harvesting procedures. Prerequisite(s): BIO 111 or BIO 124 and BIO 125.

This course is designed to acquaint students with environmental and economic rationale for management of Maine's natural resources. A format of weekly seminars dealing with current topics in resource management will be presented by working professionals. Included in this program will be an overview of techniques employed in implementing management policies. Prerequisites: BIO 111 or BIO 124 and BIO 125.

This course will study basic principles and techniques of microbiology. Consideration will be given to microbial structure, growth, physiology and the reaction of microorganisms to their physical, chemical and biological environment. Laboratory emphasis will be placed on developing proper laboratory techniques and on identification of microorganisms. Prerequisites: college level Biology or Anatomy & Physiology

This is an upper level course designed for students who plan to major in biology. It goes into detail in Eukaryotic cell biology (cell structure and function) and provides a strong introduction into molecular biology. Stress will be placed on reading and critically reviewing peer reviewed journal articles Prerequisites: BIO111 or BIO122.

This course is an opportunity for students to work in a professional laboratory setting. This work based learning will enhance students' abilities well beyond the scope or capabilities of the academic program at SMCC and will provide students with valuable real life experience and the opportunity to refine career objectives. The student is primarily responsible to the employer for the various work responsibilities established and is also responsible to the course instructor to complete specific academic requirements. This course may be repeated for credit. Prerequisite(s): BIO 124/125 and BIO 251

A rigorous examination of the key decisions that business organizations face, with particular emphasis on the role that technology and society play when making those decisions. Students examine numerous situations involving products, processes, and markets to familiarize themselves with the choices that face business owners and their employees. A short entrepreneurial, product design project and longer negotiation module are included. Prerequisite: MAT 020.

An introductory course that prepares a student to become skilled at basic accounting procedures, with the intent of accurately presenting financial information for decision making. The material is vital for all participants in business. Students will learn about balance sheets, income measurement, the recording process involving journals and ledgers, and the accounting cycle. Students will also examine the major elements of financial statements such as sales and accounts receivables, inventories, long lived assets, liabilities, and equity. Financial statement analysis occurs throughout. Prerequisite: MAT 020.

Building on fundamentals learned in Financial Accounting, students are introduced to several important analytical tools found in business. Topics include the time value of money, the concept of risk, budgeting, costing of products, capital budgeting, debt management, and working capital management. Students will use computers extensively in order to become comfortable with these tools. Prerequisite: BUS 111 and MAT 050.
