In addition to the exploration of the cooking, beating, and sheet forming of fiber into paper, students will learn about the history of papermaking, the materials used in the history of writing and printing, and the aesthetics of material usage as it pertains to interpreting a specific written text or visual image. The course will also involve a critical analysis of works of art and books using handmade paper and a comparative study of paper made from assorted fibers, historical and modern.
