Joseph Campbells seminal work The Hero with a Thousand Faces will form the basis for analyzing the structure and significance of the hero's odyssey in mythic literature.

This course will assess the applications and limitations of Joseph Campbell's theories of the heroic quest in relation to feminine roles in mythic literature. Alternative theories and approaches by Maureen Murdock Clarissa Pinkola Estes Jean Shinoda Bolen and Marija Gimbutas among others are presented.
