Eliot epitomize literary Modernism and their experience of the post-World War I world emphasizes the decay of Western culture along with the fragmentation of the self. We will examine two short works by Joyce (A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man) and Woolf (Mrs. Dalloway) as well as some selected poems by T. S. Eliot (The Waste Land The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock etc.) to explore the nature of the fragmented self and consider these authors efforts to find wholeness and healing through their literary art.
