Questions considered include: Who were the Progressives What did they stand for What distinguished their understanding of progress from earlier Enlightenment views both in America and Europe How did historicism, positivism, and evolution, the three most powerful intellectual movements of the late nineteenth century, affect their understanding of human nature, politics, and law What is their enduring contribution to American political life as we enter the twenty-first century Readings include Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Herbert Croly, Walter Lippmann, John Dewey, and contemporary thinkers.
