First semester of Clinical Practice taken concurrently with SW 655 Clinical Seminar. Students begin their professional development in community agencies. Small case load & close supervision expected. FALL ONLY. Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment with SW 655 and SW 625.

Seminar taken concurrently Clinical Practicum I. Students expected to integrate academic course work, including values & ethics, with the practice of clinical social work, and to analyze & evaluate their effectiveness with clients. FALL ONLY.

Clinical Seminar II must be taken concurrently with Clinical Practicum II. This online seminar/online course provides students with further opportunity to integrate academic course work, including values and ethics, with the actual practice of clinical social work, and to think critically about their clinical work with clients. The seminar/online course allows students to continue with peer clinical case consultation format. In addition, the seminar/online course permits students to focus on creating an e-portfolio that will be reviewed by peers and the instructor. Prerequisites: Successful completion of SW 625, SW 650, and SW 655; Concurrent enrollment in SW 660.

Continuation of Clinical Practicum I. Students expected to further develop their clinical skills for assessment & intervention with individuals, families & groups. Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of Clinical Practicum I & Clinical Practice Seminar. SPRING ONLY.

This course will provide students with an understanding of the characteristics and dynamics of families, couples, and significant others affected by substance use and abuse. The role culture plays in the experience of substance abuse disorders will be explored. Students will learn how to assess and develop appropriate intervention strategies for families, couples, and significant others. These systems can also be used to enhance and support treatment; students will learn factors involved in determining when, how, and why a client's significant others might be utilized. LEC

Current topics supplementing general social work knowledge of professionals in the field. Subjects offered as topics include: Addictions and Professional Enabling, Dynamics of Change, Computer Skills for Social Services Budgeting, Short Term Social Work Interaction. LEC

Substance abuse problems currently prevalent, recognize behavior related to substance abuse disorders, family relationships, and professional enabling as barriers to treatment. LEC

Interaction of alcohol and drug use physically, psychologically, and behaviorally. Assess appropriate level of care and medical intervention; brain dysfunction related to effects of chemicals. LEC

(1). Assessment, planning, and case management to empower the consumer toward self-direction and goal setting. Application to addiction counseling and emergency assistance. LEC

(1). High-risk issues for substance abusers; HIV, AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, coexisting mental, cognitive, and developmental disorders, and other topics in health care that substance abuse counselors must know. LEC
