The purpose of the course is to introduce interested students to the basic mission, values and ethics, knowledge base, methods, and services of the social work profession. An overview of the United States' historical response to human needs and the current status of public social welfare policy will be explored. No prerequisites.

SF S An introduction to the field of social welfare and its relationship to the social work profession, charged with carrying out its primary missions. Specific social welfare policies will be analyzed, particularly as those policies affect individuals and families in need. LEC

This course presents an overview of Generalist Social Work Perspectives. The emphasis of this course will be on introducing students to the integration of biological, psychological and social contexts in order to prepare them for upper-level course work in social work theories and practice. No prerequisites.

An introductory course which focuses on assisting students to understand their own and others' sexual development and expression, as found in attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. Physiological, psychological, and social/cultural aspects of human sexuality will be reviewed. The format of the course will include: lectures, discussion, value clarification exercises, and the use of explicit audio-visual materials. LEC

This course focuses upon drug and alcohol addiction, its sequela treatment models, and their effectiveness. Overarching questions will include acceptance of chemical addiction as a disability and interdiction policies. Students should expect to spend time in various community learning environments. LEC

This class will approach the study of diverse populations in the United States from social, literary, and political perspectives. Stories (both fiction and non-fiction), essays, and commentaries will be used to enable students to learn about the importance of understanding diversity, the experiences of diverse populations in our midst, and the means by which the barriers that prevent cross-cultural understanding may be removed. Covers major stress-management techniques, helping others cope with stress, and promoting wellness. Concepts, theories, and models of stress, psychological basis for stress, relationship between personality and stress, family and social stress, job stress, dissatisfaction, and burnout are discussed. Enroll through Continuing Education. LEC

Develop knowledge about human behavioral interactions, using person-in-environment perspective. Bio-psychosocial aspects of individual, family & group development & interactions are emphasized. Provides the foundation for developing direct social work practice skills. Prerequisite: SW 100, SW 250 or consent.
