Lectures & lab topics on CPR, airway care & management, emergency care, mechanical ventilation & care of the critically ill patient. Prerequisite: AL 289.

Lectures & group discussion of diagnostic procedures used by pulmonary physicians in evaluating patients with respiratory disease. Emphasis placed on etiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, & treatment of obstructed & restricted pulmonary diseases. Prerequisite: consent.

An in-depth exploration of critical care medicine. Students execute procedures relating to care of the patient being mechanically ventilated. Students are also given clinical experience in EKG's & pulmonary function studies. Students are also introduced to neonatal critical care medicine. Prerequisite: AL 289.

An introduction to medical microbiology. Special emphasis on pathogens related to the cardiopulmonary systems. Students are also exposed to new, current & advanced clinical respiratory therapy topics. Prerequisite: AL 292

5.00 Credits
Clinical rotations in pulmonary rehabilitation/home care, advanced ventilation techniques, hemodynamic monitoring, & speciality rotations that the student is concerned with related to respiratory therapy. Students also receive clinical experience in pediatrics & neonatology. Prerequisite: AL 293.

Instruction in fields of obstetrics, neonatology and pediatrics as related to respiratory care. Includes sections on medical ethics & department management. Prerequisite: AL 382.

2.00 Credits
An introduction to the Diagnostic Ultrasound profession. Topics include discussion of sonographic terminology, basic theories of equipment operation, body imaging, seminars, inpatient care, professionalism, & information concerning clinical education.

4.00 Credits
Clinical introduction to mega-voltage therapeutic treatment machines, simulators & computers for verification. Students learn patient monitoring systems, management of treatment machine malfunctions, radiation treatment record keeping, legal issues, treatment verification & delivering a prescribed course of radiation therapy with wedge & compensating filters.

An introduction to the history of radiation therapy & the study of epidemiology, etiology, screening, detection & the diagnosis of cancer will be covered. Basic concepts of patient care using a multidisciplinary approach are identified. Factors influencing patient general health during & following a course of radiation treatment are discussed.

The study of imaging radiation properties, radiation interaction with matter, methods of radiation protection, radiation measuring & monitoring devices. Topics include: math pertinent to radiation therapy, x-ray production, imaging techniques & brachytherapy sources in regard to preparation, utilization & disposal. The study of basic physics concepts related to radiation therapy and treatment planning including x-ray production and intensity, radiation interactions with matter, radiation measurement and detection. Course content also includes high energy beam geometry and beam utilization with linear accelerators and other high energy machines.
