TRAVEL COURSE - Students will learn about the Southeastern Asian country where America's experience has been a difficult one, and to do so in the context of Vietnam's rich history and the forces in its life that have shaped it. One clear and ever-present goal will be to understand the cultural differences between Vietnam and the United States, the reasons why America's venture there was unpleasant, and the ways in which both nations are seeking to repair that breach between them and to be partners in the world. Prerequisites: None. Extra fees: $2000, plus personal expenses. Instructor: Lloyd Hunter. A-F grading. Satisfies one intercultural requirement.

A course which provides the student an opportunity to look beyond the borders of his/her cultural background. This course focuses on the dynamic nature of the act of speaking and listening. Students will become more perceptive and will develop functional skills related to communicating in a satisfying manner with people whose lives have been organized and rooted in different cultural backgrounds. Principles and methods to be applied in talking and listening across cultures will be explored. The course will include some lectures and many opportunities for student participation, including role playing and simulations. Short reponse papers will be assigned during the course and each student will complete an individual project whill be selected in consultation with the professor.

Beginning level student athletic trainers will observe and participate in 2-two week clinical rotations at outside athletic training settings designed to assist them in professional exploration, increase application of knowledge, obtain required competencies, and accrue required clinical hours. Prerequisites: Sophomore standing. Fees: No more than $100 (to cover transportation and food.)

Intensive study of the political, social, and cultural forces that made the 1960s perhaps the most dynamic era in modern American history and the dramatic innovations those years provoked in the art, music, literature, film, journalism, lifestyles, social activism, and religious practices of the time and of succeeding decades. Particular emphasis will be placed on examination and discussion of the significance of the youth culture, protest movements, and student activism during the period under study. Prerequisite: None Fees: None

This course will explore the various types of relationships that we humans are motivated to seek out in our day-to-day lives. We will look at friendship, romance, intimacy, commitment, and family relationships. We will study the kinds of rewards and costs involved in each type of relationship.

The emphasis in this course will be to explore how basic psychological principles can be applied to issues and problems encountered during the course of everyday living. Topics include interpersonal communication, critical thinking, problem solving, learning and memory, self-control, interpersonal relationships, and time/stress management.

Mediation is a form of conflict management used in many settings today - the legal profession, education, communities, the criminal justice system, and in peace-making groups ranging in scope from local to international impact. This course will help students develop an understanding of (1) the dynamics of conflict, (2) the essentials of conflict management, (3) and the mediation process and its appropriate use. Skills will be taught in the areas of effective communication and facilitation of the mediation process. Students will increase their awareness of how cultural and value differences and ethical standards impact the mediation process. A couple of local field trips may be required. Prerequisites: None. Fees: None
