The American Red Cross Lifeguard Training program provides lifeguards with the skills and knowledge necessary to keep patrons of aquatic facilities safe in and around the water. Skill Prerequisite: Must be able to swim 500 Meters and retrieve a 10lb. brick from a 9ft. depth. Additional course fee assessed. Graded Pass/Fail. Spring.

The American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course provides instructor candidates the training needed to teach courses in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety Program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants' progress. Prerequisite: Candidates must be at least 16 years old (proof of age required) by last class session and successfully complete the basic skills test the first night of class. Basic Skills Strokes: Front Crawl, 25 yds.; Back Crawl, 25 yds.; Sidestroke, 25 yds.; Breaststroke, 25 yds.; Elementary Backstroke, 25 yds.; Butterfly, 15 yds. Candidates must also maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water and tread water for 1 minute. On demand - Fall or Spring.

Responsibilities, mechanics, and techniques of officiating volleyball and basketball are learned through practical experience. IHSAA certification is available. Fall.

This course serves as an introduction for students who may enter a profession that includes the teaching and/or coaching of physical activities. Students will be presented with history, philosophies, and principles underlying the current status and nature of physical activity and sport within the school curriculum and society. The course will introduce background information and include discussion on sport psychology, pedagogy, and physiology. Fall.

Methods, techniques, and teaching progressions for movement activities in the areas of tumbling and rhythmic activities. Contemporary activities to be covered include cooperative games, fitness activities, track and field, and an introduction to outdoor education theory and practice. Education majors will experience and demonstrate an understanding of a variety of teaching methods and curricular approaches applicable to a K- 12 teaching setting. Prerequisite: education majors - PED 234 and EDU 124; recreation majors - PED 234; or consent of department. Spring.

A topic of current interest in physical education will be taught. Topics will vary depending on faculty interest. Course will be offered upon request of a faculty member and with approval of the vice president for academic affairs.

This course is designed to enable students to explore and develop educational strategies in physical education. Topics emphasized will be assessment & evaluation, lesson plans, classroom management, diversity, research, integration of disciplines, curriculum development and multiple intelligences. A technology component is included. Prerequisite: Junior standing. Fall.

The unique contributions of health, physical education, and safety, as they relate to the total development of the elementary child, will be covered. Methods, materials management, and motivational and evaluation techniques for elementary children including the exceptional child will be covered. Prerequisite: Students must be enrolled in EFE/SFE 384 or 484. Fall.

This course is designed to provide basic knowledge of terminology associated with and the general characteristics pertaining to students with disabilities. In addition, the course will address federal and state laws pertaining to the education of individuals with disabilities, and the process for referral and placement in the least restrictive environment. Fall, even academic years.
