An examination of the mass media in the United States and the world, communications theory, media history, professional opportunities in the media, as well as initial practical experiences in various types of media writing. Students take the departmental proficiency exam near the end of the semester while enrolled in this course. Fall and Spring.

An introduction to the principles of visual literacy through hands-on experience in three media: digital photography, graphic design, and audio/interactive PDFs. Students will learn to tell effective visual stories within the context of history, ethics and principles of visual communications. Prerequisites: JOU 101, JOU 121, and JOU 199. Fall and Spring.

Basic to intermediate news gathering, writing, self-editing and editing. Introduction to use of electronic and paper documents and the cultivation of human sources. Extensive practitioner experience and awareness of ethics in the newsroom. Complete familiarity with Associated Press Style is required, along with an introduction to databases and Internet searching. Prerequisites: JOU 101, JOU 121, and JOU 199. Fall and Spring.

Students must show proficiency in spelling, grammar, and Associated Press style before they may enroll in advanced courses required for the journalism major or minor. Students must take this proficiency test initially at the end of the semester in which they are enrolled in JOU 121, and must score at least 75 percent to continue with the journalism curriculum. Must be taken concurrently with JOU 121. Graded on a pass/fail basis. Fall and Spring.

Focuses on the nature and role of public relations as a management function and on the societal forces affecting the public relations profession. Topics include public relations ethics, theory, history, practice areas, and professional standards. Prerequisites: JOU 101, JOU 121, and JOU 199. Spring.

Provides students with introductory practical skills needed to work in multi-media publishing settings. Students learn how to merge news reporting and writing with audio, visual and interactive Web design. Each student develops an interactive media platform that includes student-generated news gathering, news writing, digital photography, digital audio, digital video, social media elements and mobile media elements. Fall and spring. Prerequisites: JOU 120, JOU 150 and JOU 160.

A topic of current interest in journalism will be taught. Topics will vary depending on faculty and student interest. Course will be offered upon the request of a faculty member and with approval of the vice president for academic affairs.

The course explores the connections among the liberal arts and issues, developments and trends in the mass media. Includes study of media theories and media history; and of how selected aspects of liberal arts and exploratory course topics are evident - and are often necessary for career success - in the mass media. Course requires a minimum of 20 hours of work on a service learning project. Open to all majors. Prerequisites: All LA core courses - LA 101, LA 102, LA 103, LA 111, LA 112, LA 201.

Analysis of classic and current public relations campaigns and case studies. Includes explication and evaluation of strategies, tactics, execution and results, and the development of "best practices" portfolios. Prerequisites: JOU 101, JOU 121, JOU 199, and JOU 221. Fall.
