A study of major British literary works from the Restoration to the 18th century, especially the efforts of several major British authors to assimilate classical and Christian values in the epic and in satirical poetry and prose fiction, the emergence of the modern novel, and some important developments in the tradition of comic theatre. A study of selected poetry by those revolutionary 19th century writers, the Romantics, as well as a sampling of representative philosophical and critical writings and novels influenced by Romantic interests and ideas. A study of selected works of the most respected poets and novelists of the Victorian period in British literature (1832-1901). Attention will be paid to how the British novel in this period developed into a significant art form and how the poetry reflects social concerns and new interests in dramatic form. A close examination of some of the most significant and innovative literature to come out of the British Isles from 1910 to 1970. Attention will be paid to the inseparability of idea and technique and to the ways that the authors engage the readers in a collaborative creation of the text. Prerequisites: ENG 118 and ENG 200. Training in literary research methods and supervised writing of a research paper. English majors are required to take this course with ENG 333. Corequisite: concurrent registration in ENG 333. Spring.

A study of some of Shakespeare's major comedies, tragedies, and histories. Attention will be paid to Shakespeare's poetry, dramaturgy, and vision of the human experience. English majors must take this course concurrently with ENG 332. Prerequisite: ENG 117 or THE 125. Spring.

A study based on reading and discussion of significant plays ranging from ancient Greece to 19th century Europe and America, with focus on changing theatrical and dramatic conventions and how they reflect cultural changes. Same as THE 349. Prerequisite: ENG 117, THE 110, THE 125 or consent of instructor. Spring, odd academic years.

A study and discussion of significant plays ranging from the late 19th century to the present, with focus on the establishment of realism as a norm, the reactions to realism, and the eclecticism of drama today. Works by African, African-American, Asian-American, Latino, and Native American playwrights will be studied. Research paper will be required. Same as THE 350. Satisfies intercultural exploratory requirement. Prerequisite: ENG 118 or THE 125 or consent of instructor. Fall, even academic years.
