This is the senior competency practicum for students majoring in Life Science, Physical Science or Social Studies. Satisfactory completion of all Praxis II tests required by the State of Indiana to be licensed in the student's content major. Scores are established by the State of Indiana, accepted by the Franklin College education department, and are subject to change annually. Passing scores are required to be on file with the Franklin College education department prior to the beginning of the spring semester of student teaching. Note: all other secondary licensure areas complete the senior competency practicum in the content department. Graduation and licensure requirement. Fall, senior year.

An introduction to American elementary, middle, and secondary school education designed to help students explore teaching as a career. Course content includes history, theories, and philosophies that influence current educational practice. Sessions will include presentations by practitioners and technology training. Students also have an opportunity to compare and contrast philosophies of education and develop their own. This is the first required class in the sequence for all teacher education students; the policies and practices of the Franklin College program will be outlined. Prerequisite: Good college academic standing. Spring, freshman year. Fall, on demand with permission of the education department.

This course explores typical and atypical patterns in human growth and development from conception through adolescence. Students will examine theories and research in key areas such as learning, intelligence, and motivation which impact the ability of the teacher to design and implement integrated curriculum in the classroom. Students will become aware of current societal issues, such as child abuse and neglect, changing family structures, and multiculturalism, which influence the lives of children. A variety of instructional strategies will be utilized including group presentations, analysis of journal articles, and case analysis. Taken concurrently with EDP 222. Prerequisites: 2.25 GPA (A=4.00) documented Praxis I scores and EDU 124. Fall, sophomore year.

A critical examination of a wide variety of literature for children and young people. Values of literature for children, standards for judging quality, exposure to books about other cultures, and methods of encouraging responses to literature are emphasized. Elementary education students must take concurrently with EDU 222 and EDP 222. Fall.

The first in the series of courses in the development of instructional approaches for both elementary and secondary education students. The primary focus is on the knowledge and performance of basic lesson planning and assessment, plus general teaching and classroom management skills. Related areas include, but are not limited to, cooperative learning strategies, classroom management, questioning techniques, and adapting lessons for the needs of special learners. Taken concurrently with EFE/SFE 284. Prerequisites: 2.25 GPA (A=4.00), EDU 124, EDU 222 and EDP 222. Spring, sophomore year

An introduction to the rules of English grammar and linguistics that apply to elementary school teaching with an emphasis on effective strategies for teaching language structure and syntax to English as a New Language (ENL) students. Taken concurrently with EDU 225 and EFE 284. Prerequisites: 2.25 GPA (A=4.00), EDU 124, EDU 222, and EDP 222. Spring, sophomore year.

Promotes curricular and instructional innovations for culturally diverse classrooms, including strategies for working with English Language Learners. Provides opportunities to explore and learn about ideas, people, cultures, and biases that impact how teachers conceptualize the world and requires completion of a practical service project tied to students' field experience. Taken concurrently with SFE 385 Secondary and Physical Education Majors; EFE 484 Elementary Education majors. Prerequisites: 2.5 GPA (A=4.0), and admission to teacher education program. Spring Junior year Secondary and Physical Education majors; Fall, senior year Elementary Education Majors.
