Methods and materials for teaching literacy in the elementary school. Emphasizes emergent and developmental literacy processes and the role of the teacher as a knowledgeable decision-maker in the instruction of reading, writing, listening, speaking, and viewing in a diverse community of learners. Taken concurrently with EFE 384, EDE 365, and SCI 334 Prerequisites: 2.50 GPA (A=4.00) and admission to the teacher education program. Fall, junior year.

Continues the study of methods and materials and the teacher's role from EDE 344. Emphasizes individual differences within a diverse community of literacy learners; formal and informal assessment techniques; and professional development. Taken concurrently with EFE 385, EDE 366, and SCI 335. Prerequisites: 2.50 GPA (A=4.00), EDE 344, and admission to the teacher education program. Spring, junior year.

This course complements the material and learning approaches within MAT 323. Topics include: curriculum and instruction, equity, number sense, measurement, geometry, data analysis, and tools for teaching mathematics in the elementary classroom. Emphasis is on alternative assessment techniques, NCTM standards, problem-solving skills, use of manipulatives, and the development of a student-centered learning environment that integrates with other subjects in the curriculum as well as the child's real world. Taken concurrently with EFE 384, MAT 323, EDE 344, and SCI 334. Prerequisite 2.50 GPA (A=4.00) and admission to teacher education program. Fall of junior year.

This course is a continuation for EDE 365 and complements the material and learning approaches within MAT 324. Taken concurrently with EFE 385, MAT 324, EDE 345, and SCI 335. Prerequisite 2.50 GPA (A=4.00), EDE 365 and admission to teacher education program. Spring of junior year.

The foundation content, instructional components, and guiding principles in the design of an interdisciplinary unit involving social studies, the fine arts, and technology. Taken concurrently with EFE 484, EDU 315, EDE 444, FNA 420, and PED 222. Prerequisites: 2.50 GPA (A=4.00) and admission to student teaching program. Fall, senior year.

Instructional methods, subject matter, and lesson and curricular planning for teaching social studies in the elementary schools, grades K-8. Includes a focus on strategies for developing skills, concepts, and values plus ethnic and cultural awareness. Satisfies intercultural exploratory requirement. Taken concurrently with EFE 484, EDU 315, EDE 443, FNA 420, and PED 222. Prerequisites: 2.50 GPA (A=4.00) and admission to student teaching program. Fall, senior year.

A senior level course which includes the redesign of the teacher education program's compliance portfolio into a tool for successful job searching and the Impact on Student Learning Project. Strategies for demonstrating past leadership plus future career placement and advancement explored. Same as EDS 456. Taken concurrently with EDE 457 and EST 489. Prerequisites: 2.50 GPA (A=4.00) and admission to student teaching program. Spring, first four weeks, senior year.

A capstone course which explores the issues, trends, and direct application of selected assessment and evaluation strategies used by classroom teachers. An emphasis is placed on the design of authentic assessments, including portfolios. Other topics include standardized testing, recordkeeping, and communication. Taken concurrently with EDE 456 and EST 489. Prerequisites: 2.50 GPA (A=4.00) and admission to the student teaching program. Spring, first four weeks, senior year.
