    To introduce students to the history and culture of North Africa with specific emphasis on Tunisia and Morocco. We will study these nations from the period of the arrival of the Romans through the region's Islamization, and then through a number of subsequent dynasties. From this we will move on to the French Protectorate, examining in depth the influences of French colonialism on the peoples of the Maghreb and their resistance to European influence. Finally we will consider the independence movements and their aftermath in Tunisia and Morocco. Historical and cultural approach. Develop French language skills. Satisfies one intercultural requirement.     A study of the aspects of Asia and the Pacific Islands: religion and multicultural studies. Featuring presentations on Hinduism, Buddhism, Shinto, Islam, folk religions and indigenos religious beliefs of Hawaii and the Pacific Islands. Also, a multicultural studies of Asia and the Pacific Islands will focus on history, political science, nationalims and colonialism. A travel experience to Hawaii.

    This course is an eco-travel course through several parks and nature preserves in south Florida. The course will include three or four days of intensive, on-campus preparation followed by 12 days of travel using a 14 passenger van. The trip will include several structured tours of state parks, wilderness preserves, and extensive investigation of the Everglades National Park. Time for individual and small group explorations will also be available. Hiking, bicycling, canoeing, and snorkel diving will also be important components of the trip. Close encounters with birds, alligators, manatees, exotic fish, and dolphins are planned for the trip. While students are not expected to have experience, a willingness to try new experiences and hike extensively are key requirements. Modest, shared accommodations will be provided in hotels and park lodges. Upon returning to campus, students will prepare final reports presented on web-pages. Grading will be based on quizzes, journals, research reports, and final reports.

    This course will meet for two weeks on campus, and then depart on Monday, January 15th, 2001, for two weeks in three countries-Israel, Jordan, and Greece. We will explore Jewish, Jordanian, and Greek cultures, the three monotheistic religions-Judaism, Islam, and Orthodox Christianity, and four different civilizations-Jewish, Nabatean, Islamic, and Byzantine, with special attention given to archaeological and religious sites and remains. A familiarization study would also be made of the Middle Eastern conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians and the present possibilities for peace. Satisfies one intercultural requirement. Prerequisite: Permission of Instructor. Fees: $2,750 (includes everything minus passport & souvenirs.)

    This course will examine the history, culture, and ethnic composition of the Southeast Asian nation of Vietnam. It will do so through in-class readings, films, discussions, and written assignments during the first week and last weeks of Winter Term, and through extensive travel in Vietnam for thirteen days hosted by the Vietnam-USA Society based in Hanoi.     This course will spend the third and fourth weeks of January on-campus studying the religions and cultures of the Middle East and then spend Spring Break in Israel and either Jordan or Egypt. Students can expect to deepen their intellectual and spiritual understanding of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. (Satisfies the intercultural requirement.)

    Throughout history people have found it important on occasion to withdraw from normal activities to experience renewal, to meditate, to draw closer to God. Recently such places have become more accessible to lay persons. This course will explore a variety of resources for spiritual renewal: Russian Orthodox, Ukranian Catholic, Roman Catholic, Quaker, Zen Buddhist, Hindu and the Labyrinth. Most of the course will be spent in the San Francisco area, staying a couple days in each monastery or retreat center. All are expected to participate in the daily services (occasionally early in the morning). We will read a classic text in spirituality for each tradition while living there. There will be a couple of free days in San Francisco. (Satisfies one intercultural requirement.) Prerequisites: Fees:$850 plus some meals.
