    Students will study photographic composition and technique on campus, then travel to the Caribbean country of Belize where they will shoot landscape and seascape scenes. Students will snorkel and take underwater photographs. They also will take photographs in the jungle and at ancient Mayan ruins. This course will be held in conjunction with the course, "Tropical Marine Biology". Together, both groups will develop Web pages based on their experiences. (Satisfies the interculutural requirement.)

    Students will participate in a service learning project in an educational setting. A problem will be identified, possible solutions will be discussed and action will be taken to help alleviate the problem. Students are expected to participate in discussions, the action (volunteering on one or more projects) and debriefing phases of the project. Satisfies one intercultural requirement. Prerequisites: none. Fees: $50 for transportation.

    Students will travel to Indianapolis to work at three inner-city missions. Students will spend one week at each mission working with people from various walks of life. In addition, students will live for several days at one of the missions to gain a greater understanding of the trials of the homeless. All missions are Christian-based ministries; therefore, students should be prepared to discuss Biblical and Christian values. Prayer will be an integral part of this course, and each day will begin and end in prayer. Each day will end with a group debriefing of the day's events as well as a discussion of the next day's preparation. The first class meeting will be at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday. Other meetings will be announced and will vary from week to week. Students should expect to spend many more hours during this course than they would otherwise in a typical 48-hour activity-oriented course. Satisfies one intercultural requirement.     Experience winter term the way it was meant to be - traveling in Norway. See and photograph a "real" winter in the land of the Viking, Nobel Peace Prize, Northern Lights, cross- country skiing, etc. Design a web site upon return. (Satisfies one intercultural requirement.) Prerequisites: none. Fees: $1,800 (includes air fare, local transportation, all meals, lodging, and film.)

    This course covers a broad range of topics related to wildlife. The focus will be the gray wolf, lynx and the white-tailed deer, but all animals directly or indirectly associated with or affected by these predators or prey may be included. The course is field-oriented and includes opportunities for backcountry travel, wildlife observation and tracking, as well as an introduction to habitats, how wildlife respond to natural and artificial disturbance, and human factors. Additional topics include wildlife research techniques, data acquisition and analysis, as well as management practices.     What is your leadership style? Recognize the leadership skills that you have and develop those that you need. Read about leadership theories from the past, study and meet with leaders of today, and consider the leadership needs of the twenty-first century. This class will focus on personal development as well as the theories and applications of leadership. In addition to regular class meetings, several field trips will also be required of participants. In past years we have met with the conductor of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the artistic director of the Indiana Repertory Theater, the coach of the Indianapolis Ice, and leaders of the Indiana legislature. Prerequisite: None. Fees: $35 (for field trip expenses)

    An investigation of the way in which movie viewers were encouraged to think toward: Allied Nations, Axis Nations, brutality and violence of Friendly vs. Enemy Troops, home front participation, etc. OWI criteria will be evaluated in light of U.S. film content. Students must prepare a paper from journal entires and write four short exams. (Satisfies the intercultural requirement.)

    This course will examine United States involvement in Vietnam from 1945 to 1975, with discussions of the military, political, diplomatic, and social impacts of the war. On a deeper level, the course will focus upon how America's entry into that conflict grew out of her own past and her perceptions and beliefs about herself. America's experience in Vietnam called into question our national myth - the belief that our society is a "city upon a hill," an example of virtue to other nations that also has a redemptive mission in the world.

    Travel-related creative writing: Learn the basics of turning your travel experiences into short stories, poems, and travel features. A trip to Norway will give us the chance to experience a beautiful foreign land and culture as we meet writers and visit sites that will feed our writing… and our imaginations! Satisfies one intercultural requirement. Prerequisite: GE 101 or consent of instructor. Fees: $2,000 (group rates for airfare, housing, food, ground transportation)

    After one week practicing Spanish conversation in Franklin, the class will spend three weeks in Venezuela. We will stay with Venezuelan families in Merida, high in the Andes Mountains, where the temperature is around 70 degrees year round. Merida, population 130,000, is the home of the University of the Andes. We will have access to the university for further instruction in Spanish and email privileges. Nearby is Pico Bolivar, a mountain over 16,000 feet, and other sightseeing attractions. There are may possibilities for side trips in Venezuela, including tropical rivers, Caribbean beaches and the major cities of Caracas and Maracaibo. During our first week of class we will decide democratically which side trips would be most interesting and still fit within out budget. Because of the effectiveness of the immersion method of learning a foreign language, there are no Spanish prerequisites, although some knowledge of Spanish would be helpful.
