This course will explore the life and works of C. S. Lewis, one of the most popular, prolific, and imaginative writers of the 20th century. An Oxford scholar and adult convert to Christianity, his writings deal with timeless questions: What is truth? Does God exist? How can a loving God allow suffering? We will examine Lewis' treatment of these and other questions through some of his most popular and enduring works in genres ranging from children's literature to theology and ethics. The course will center around discussion of assigned readings along with student projects on Lewis' life and secondary works. Also included will be a visit to the Marion E. Wade Center at Wheaton College, which houses a collection of rare Lewis items and memorabilia. Prerequisites: None. Extra Fees: Field trip to Wheaton, IL. expenses. Instructor: Robert Talbert. A-F grading.

This class will focus on the use of masks and puppets within theatre, and how that use has been affected by their use in society. It will cover the history of mask use, including, but not limited to, ancient man, African and Japanese. We will look at the modern use of masks and how it has grown from historical use, as well as the effect a mask has on a performer. For puppetry, study will be on origins, historical uses and a more modern approach within theatre. Concurrent to this study, one class day each week will focus on construction techniques; such as life casting, negative and positive molds, and a variety of structural and decorative materials. Evaluation will consist of each student writing two papers, two exams and their three hands-on projects. Extra credit will be given for projects that are chosen for use in the theatre's production of Romeo and Juliet.

After studying some of the primary texts that contribute to American ideals of heroic masculinity, we will ask how contemporary American leaders capitalize on these cultural myths as they participate in political arenas, popular culture, and self-promotion. This course includes a leadership component.
