SURG 815K: Surgical & Non-surgical Management of Spine Disorders
1.00 - 16.00 Credits
University of Arizona
Description: Back pain is the second most common reason to visit a physician (the most common is a cold). This rotation will expose medical students to the common diseases that affect the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine through direct patient interactions in the clinic, hospital and operating room. Students will learn how to complete a proper spine history and physical exam including the musculoskeletal and neurologic exams, formulate a differential diagnosis and apply current treatment plans, both operative and non-operative, which are required to manage diseases of the spine. The Spine Institute has physicians that specialize in medicine and surgery which provide patients with comprehensive spine care. We also have a musculoskeletal rehabilitation program. This rotation is designed for all students interested in surgery, internal medicine, and family medicine. Comprehensive spine care is emphasized. Students will have the opportunity to get involved in research, both retrospective studies and prospective randomized studies on a volunteer basis. Grading: Medical grades are awarded for this course: S P F K. Usually offered: Fall, Spring, Summer.
