This course will consider the changes and challenges facing African countries since the achievement of independence such as corrupt governments, huge foreign debts, poverty, starvation, religious and ethnic conflicts, and the HIV/AIDS epidemic. It will explore the ways African governments respond to these challenges, the impediments that lie n their paths, the role of the law in mediating these issues, and the role of civil society.
