The course consists of selected basic concepts in general science for practicing teachers. Within a given semester a broad area is selected within either the biological sciences or the physical/earth sciences. Other topics may be added as deemed necessary. This course may not be used for graduate credit by College of Science majors. Prerequisite: currently teaching in an elementary school.

The First-Year Seminar supports the transition of first-year students as they enter our research university. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and behaviors critical for academic and personal success. Students will acquire these capabilities as they are introduced to the foundations of inquiry-the interests, assumptions, methodologies, and potential academic and career tracks-associated with the disciplines of a particular college at SIUC. Sections will be limited to approximately 20 students each.

This course will give an introduction to University Life and what makes the SIUC campus experience unique. Students will take tours through crucial campus support centers and be expected to try new activities and engage in diverse public events across the campus. Critical and creative thinking skills will be developed and students will also learn about information literacy and how to effectively use Morris Library.

This course serves as an introduction to both the academic portion of University life as well as to the specific educational goals of the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts. It features lectures and discussions and blends the study and production of media. Students will leave the course with basic production skills which they will apply to making as well as critically analyzing media.

The course is designed to help first-year transfer students make a successful transition to college life. Students will be guided through the transfer process. Topics of discuss include the value of pursuing higher education, developing a career goal; identifying academic majors, admissions and academic requirements, university comparison, and options in financial aid. The content of the course is pertinent to any student who is planning to transfer to a four-year institution to complete a Bachelor's degree and satisfies transfer orientation requirements.
