This course uses a sociological approach to examine how religious beliefs, practices, and institutions shape gender in the United States. We will explore the relationship between gender and religion for everyday practitioners of a range of religious traditions, including Christianity, Judaism, and Hinduism.

An interdisciplinary course that includes biblical studies, politics, ethics, literary criticism, philosophical and critical theory, social movements, history, art, music, dance, and film studies. We will be considering the apocalyptic imagination and representations in religion, politics, and culture.

This course examines the advent of Christian reconciliation as a species of Judaism, a unique disclosure of the identity of God, and the enactment of a new humanity in Christ. After exploring reconciliation in Pauline communities, the course examines the character of Jewish - Christian relationships and the role of Jews in the formulation of Christian identity and theology in Europe. Other terrains of conflict and reconciliation include religion, ethnicity, race, and gender.

This course will examine the intersections of religion with human rights history, events, theories, analysis, and activist practices. There is a 40-hour Theory-Practice Learning Practicum with a local community partner.

This course will guide students as they pursue a semester-long independent ethnographic study of a religious community in the Atlanta area. Students will conduct participant observation fieldwork in a religious setting of their choosing.

Prerequisite: 130 or 131 or permission of the ins tructor May be taken more than once if topic varies Topic for 1999-2000: Religions of China - Introdu ces students to the religious dimensions of Chinese culture, both ancient and contemporary, including a survey of representative texts in translation from Confucian, Taoist, Buddhist, Isla mic and Christian traditions. Also examines religious tho ught in modern China and the shifts in government policy toward r eligion in an era of economic and social reform.
