Introduction to African Art This course will focus on the art from Nigeria and Dahomey (Benin) to introduce the student to methods of int erpreting art from Africa. The history and geography of Africa, the icono- graphy and methods of production, and the performa nce and ritual dimension of works of art will be emphasized. Thi s contextual approach to the art of Africa will provide the stu dent with the tools to analyze and appreciate the arts from Sub-Saharan countries. Further, we will consider the retentio n of the above traditions in African-American art.

Examination of the art and architecture of the classical world from the Bronze Age to the Fall of Rome. Focus on the evolution of Greek temples, the quest for naturalism in sculpture and the refinement of Black and Red figure pottery. In Rome, we will consider the changes in scale, function and use of building materials, the political landscape and the emphasis on portraiture and illusionistic wall painting.
