The supply chain concept is presented as a framework so that understanding can take place regarding the role that purchasing can play in an organization's success. Of particular importance is the 'marketing of services' that Purchasing must provide to the rest of the internal organization. The purchasing cycle from material/service sourcing to supplier payment is reviewed. Also, sources of 'need' are addressed through a discussion of MRPII/MRP and also capital and expense budgets.
