This is a course designed to introduce the student to the diagnostic methods and equipment used to interpret and evaluate the status of patients. Emphasis is on diagnostic techniques used in pulmonary function studies, blood gas analysis, cardiac and pulmonary stress testing, metabolic studies, sleep studies, bronchoscopy and pulmonary rehabilitation. The student will recognize alterations from testing data, be able to interpret these alterations with respect to possible diagnosis, degrees of impairment and recommend a treatment regime. The therapeutic techniques and procedures involved in the home and rehabilitative care of the pulmonary patient will follow the presentation of diagnostic procedures.
