Styles investigated include modern realism, tragedy, expressionism, theatre of the absurd, and contemporary perform-ance. Representative playwrights include Ibsen, Chekhov, Shaw, O'Neill, Williams, Miller, Beckett, and Shepard. Offered in alternate years.

Prerequisites: ENG 220 and ENG 312 or ENG 313 An in-depth focus, as designated by instructor, on select writers (excluding Shakespeare), move-ments, genres (excluding the novel), or literary periods in British literature from its beginnings to the 20th century. The course continues to emphasize different critical approaches to texts and to hone research skills learned in ENG 122 and ENG 220, while offering a more sophisticated look at some of the works studied in the foundations of British literature courses and an opportunity to study au-thors potentially excluded from the foundations courses. Offered in alternate years.

The course continues to emphasize different critical approaches to texts and to hone research skills learned in ENG 122 and ENG 220, while offering a more sophis-ticated look at some of the works studied in the foundations of American literature course and an opportunity to study authors potentially excluded from the foundations course. Prerequisites: ENG 318, acceptance to the internship by the chair of the English department, and approval by the school dean Provides students an opportunity to use their skills in a professional setting by allowing them to work with professional writers, editors, and producers. The internship takes place in a newspaper, maga-zine, public affairs office, or radio or television station. May be taken twice for credit. Offered annu-ally.

Prerequisites: Permission of faculty member and school dean Intensive individual study in a particular aspect of English that is not covered in regular course offer-ings. This enrichment option is limited to students who have demonstrated the potential to pursue independent scholarly activity beyond that which is expected in regular courses. Students must sub-mit a written request for enrollment prior to registration. May be repeated for credit. Weekly meet-ings with faculty member. Offered as needed.
