Prerequisite: 6 hours in History or instructor's consent Prerequisite for students matriculating in Fall 2008 or later: HIST 200 Offered occasionally Introduces students to social history through the use of secondary readings. Topics such as the family, sexuality, protest, social movements, crime, sports, industrialization, urbanization, death and education will be explored. The course will incorporate readings in European, American and non-Western history and is organized as a colloquium.

Cross Ref: POLSC 362, SOC 362 Prerequisite for students matriculating in Fall 2008 or later: HIST 200 Offered alternate years Examines the rise of capitalism in the late 18th Century and the socialist response in the 19th Century and analyzes the theories of Smith, Marx, Engels, Sumner and Spencer. What has been the impact of these systems upon social class, alienation, poverty, war and peace, both historically and in contemporary society Explores topics including health care, globalization, the nature of work and leisure, the role of government as an agent of social justice or repression, and the role of elites within the political economy of capitalist and socialist societies.

Prerequisite for students matriculating in Fall 2008 or later: HIST 200 Offered occasionally Explores theoretical and methodological trends that have shaped the evolution of the historical profession, from historicism through recent post-modern approaches. The course is organized as a colloquium and is intended for history majors and advanced minors, as well as other students with a serious interest in history.

Prerequisite: Senior standing in History Prerequisite for students matriculating in Fall 2008 or later in the History and History Education programs: HIST 200 and one 300- level HIST course. Prerequisite for students matriculating in Fall 2008 or later in the Social Sciences Education program: HIST 200 or POLSC 250, and one 300-level HIST course. Offered fall semesters and spring semesters as necessary This course is an opportunity for students to demonstrate, refine and consolidate knowledge of skills and content acquired during their previous years of study. It is a collaborative as well as a culminating learning experience that permits students to pursue individual research projects and submit them to their peers. The seminar will center upon a topic to be determined by the instructor.

Prerequisite: consent of instructor Prerequisite for students matriculating in Fall 2008 or later: HIST 200, and one 300-level HIST course Students who have done exceptionally well may take this course in order to pursue a topic of their own choosing. The student's eligibility, general topic, specific selection of readings and the format (e.g., a research paper, tutorial, short summary essays) will be worked out with the supervising instructor who, with the consent of the chair, will determine the field in which the course will be credited.

Reading, discussion, writing and training in the process of documented research. Instructor will assign selected readings related to the current Honors Seminars theme, which will provide the subject matter for student writing. Fulfills both the English 101 and 102 University core requirement.

An introduction to philosophical thinking, analysis and argument, incorporating examination of primary philosophical texts concerned with ethical and/or political issues. Course readings will be selected to address the Honors Program theme. Satisfies University core requirement of Philosophy 150.

Course will emphasize critical thinking and writing, and will nurture modes of inquiry and research strategies employed in the disciplines represented. Interdisciplinary study in the sciences related to issues of current concern, or to milestones in the history of science.
