5 clinical hours Cross Ref: EDUG 413 Offered every term This course explores the characteristics and learning needs of exceptional learners and regular classroom modifications necessary for these learners. The responsibilities of teachers under federal Legislation are emphasized. Learners with special needs include students with mental retardation, gifted, learning disabilities, physical/health impairment, communication disorders, behavior disorders, vision or hearing impairment, varied cultural backgrounds and specific risk factors. Level 1 education course: pre-admission to the SOE.

The nature of the child is studied from a multicultural perspective. Historical and conceptual analysis of the family and the school as they relate to the education of young children. Legal, commercial, religious, familial and political institutions are explored for their effects on the development of the young child. Level 2 education course: requires admission to the SOE.

10 clinical hours Cross Ref: EDUG 432 Prerequisite: Child Development Offered annually Study of learning characteristics in the first eight years of life. Emphasis on trends in early identification of atypical development by means of screening and diagnostic instruments; preschool remedial programs; legislation. Clinical experience includes: administration of formal and informal diagnostic measures; observations in early childhood special education settings; development of integrated case studies; and simulation of screenings and staffings. Level 2 education course: requires admission to the SOE.

Study of elementary and secondary schools that exemplify a variety of educational philosophies, organizational procedures, curricula, and socioeconomic conditions. Emphasis on field site visitations. Weekly seminars. Limited to small groups. Designed for summer sessions.
