3 credits An historical survey of the varieties of experience that have shaped African American life. Specific topics will include the African roots of African American culture; slave trade and the Middle Passage; slavery, resistance and the struggle for emancipation; Reconstruction and Jim Crow; the growth of distinctive African American cultures in literature, music, sports, and the arts; the struggle for equality; and contemporary African American culture, including the post World War II Caribbean influx. 3 credits This course examines the history and culture of immigrant groups in America, particularly in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Topics will include the history of immigration from Africa, the Carribean, Europe, and Asia, the shaping of an ethnic identity among various immigrant people, and the literature written by and about members of those groups. Prerequisites: C- or better in Academic Reading AND Writing: Introduction to Composition, or placement in Composition.

3 credits Designed to assist traditional and non-traditional first year college students in meeting the expectations of a curriculum and a career in health-related fields. The student will become familiar with the rigors of higher education and the specific skills needed to maximize the student's opportunity for academic and clinical success. The course will include a comprehensive overview of the duties and responsibilities associated with clinical competency. Interdisciplinary learning strategies, correlating clinical and didactic education, life management skills, work ethics, and critical thinking skills necessary for all health providers will be emphasized. Prerequisite: C- or better in Foundations of Reading AND Writing: Introduction to the Essay, OR C- or better in Integrated Reading and Writing I; OR placement into Academic Reading AND Writing: Introduction to the Composition, OR Introduction to College Reading and Writing, OR Integrated Reading and Writing II; OR placement into Perspectives in the Humanities OR Composition. 2 credits (ALH-121)(SCI*121) (SCI-101) (55-103) Provides professionals (police, fire, coaches, athletic trainers, lifeguards, educators, public safety, medical and dental personnel, etc.) with knowledge and skills in providing basic emergency medical care until further assistance arrives. Focus on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (2 person CPR) training for the professional. Certification will be granted upon successful completion.
