Overview of the poetry of the Victorian era, which we will read within its cultural context, examining the social, political, scientific, and religious foreces that helped to shape this literature. We will also pay close attention to how poets adopted and adapted traditional forms, exploring poets' and critics' debates about what poetry should be and do. Poets to be read may include Matthew Arnold, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Christina Rossetti, Algernon Charles Swinburne, William Morris, Augusta Webster, Charlotte Mew, Gerard Manly Hopkins, Amy Levy, Thomas Hardy, and Rudyard Kipling. 3 credits.
