The Latino population currently consists of approximately 37 million people in the United States; by the year 2050 the Census estimates that the Latino population will makeup at least 25 percent of the total U.S. population. This diverse group traces its origins to a variety of contries; and, its experience in the United States is quite varied. This seminar will explore issues of race, class, and gender within the Latino community in the United State. It will examine the socio-economic experiences of various Latino groups (Chicanos, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Dominicans, Central and South Americans), as well as issues of identity, pan-ethnicity, representation of group politics, language and gender & class conflicts.
