This course will examine how court decisions, statutes, the legal system and the traditional legal approaches to justice have affected, positively and negatively, the experiences of Latinos. We will engage in a comparative analysis of the common-law and civil-law traditions in the U.S, and Latin American countries as a basis of understanding historical and contemporary legal approaches. We will also explore thearea of legal thought known as Critical Legal Studies and Critical Race Theory. The course will focus on improving students' critical thinking and analysis skills through class discussion and debate, and writing assignments.

In the last thirty years, the number of countries that select their rulers through competitive elections has increased sharply. This class explores the practical implications of ideals like responsiveness and accountability for elected officials, and how these operate in conjunction with the separation of powers, independent judiciaries, political party discipline, pressure from international actors, as well as more base incentives, such as personal amibiton and corruption.
