This course covers the major themes in the history of Southern africa in the last 200 years. The primary focus is on the lives of Africans and how people shaped their world, especially under the strains of colonialism and apartheid, and in their struggle for independence. Although the country of South Africa will occupy a significant place in the course, important processes like industrialization affected the entire region, and surrounding colonies and countries also will be studied.
