    Class hours: 3.0 Lecture This course is for ESL students who wish to improve vocabulary skills. Emphasis is on building vocabulary, dictionary skills, and word recognition skills to be used in everyday language and college courses. Students will be introduced to the most frequently used English words and will also learn how to infer meaning from context.

    Class hours: 3.0 Lecture This course is for advanced ESL students who wish to improve vocabulary skills at a level beyond that of the intermediate. The emphasis is on general and specialized vocabulary development, advanced dictionary skills, word recognition skills, improvement of sight vocabulary, and application of advanced vocabulary in context techniques.

    Class hours: 1.5 Lecture/0.5 Laboratory This course identifies and improves the production of American speech sounds. Students prepare, practice and present various oral messages. Emphasis is on stress and intonation. Topics center on students' needs and personal experiences. This course may be taken for a maximum of 2 times.

    Class hours: 1.5 Lecture/0.5 Laboratory This course introduces basic spelling rules and provides students with the opportunity for practice orally and in writing. Texts and supplemental materials will be used to reinforce the relationship between oral and written expression. This course may be taken for a maximum of 2 times.

    Class hours: 3.0 Independent Study A course to provide opportunity for individual research and field projects under the direction of a faculty member in a given department. With the guidance of the faculty member, students prepare and carry out a written learning agreement describing the purposes and outcomes of the project. Students should expect to meet with the supervising faculty member one to two hours each week for conferences. Credit is based upon the number of hours in the semester expected to complete the project (1 unit for 54 hours, 2 units for 108 hours). This course may be taken a maximum of 2 times. For selected disciplines, UC transfer credit may be possible after admission to a UC campus, pending review of appropriate course materials by UC staff. See a counselor for an explanation.     Class hours: 5.0 Lecture/1.0 Laboratory Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of the English As A Second Language Placement Process or ESL 2 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher. This course introduces advanced and high-frequency structures of English and provides practice of these structures. Texts and supplemental materials are used as well as the students' environment. Sounds continue to be practiced orally. Writing and reading reinforce comprehension.

    Class hours: 1.5 Lecture This course improves the literal, interpretive and critical comprehension skills of the students. Emphasis is on identifying main ideas and significant details, sequence of relationships, inferences of fact and tone, figurative language, and propaganda.

    Class hours: 1.5 Lecture Students study American expressions and American social customs. Students incorporate common expressions in their conversation and writing. Social customs, such as those regarding time, dress, guest behavior, gestures, and selected public encounters, are discussed.

    Class hours: 1.5 Lecture This course is for students who need work in oral and written English skills in their field. It provides an opportunity to become familiar with situations particular to their field. This course may be taken for a maximum of 2 times.
