This course presents the history, current status, and future of environmental issues, with special emphasis on California. The biological, geological, and geographical aspects of water quality, air quality, energy, land use, and the coastal environment will be examined, as well as the policies used to manage them. This is a general studies course offering an opportunity for a more complete understanding of environmental problems discussed in Earth Science 101. It includes a hands-on approach to understanding the processes and materials involved in environmental problems by identification, measurement, and analysis in the field and in the lab.     Class hours: 3.0 Lecture Recommendation: Satisfactory completion of the English Placement Process or ENGL 52 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C "or higher and satisfactory completion of the Math Placement Process or MATH 40 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher. This course consists of an introduction to the geography of the oceans, geology of the ocean basins, and the chemistry and physics of sea water. The ecology of the sea and its effect on ecosphere are also covered. Landforms and processes of the coastal zone and use and abuse of the marine environment are also discussed.     Class hours: 3.0 Laboratory Prerequisite: ESCI 104 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher, or concurrent enrollment. This laboratory/field study course is designed to supplement Earth Science 104. Emphasis will be placed on the interrelationships between the geological, chemical, physical, and biological aspects of the marine environment. It is not open to those with college credit in geology, physical geography or physical anthropology. It is an integrated course designed to give broad, general knowledge in the areas of anthropology, astronomy, geology, geography, meteorology. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC* *UC credit limits may apply. No credit for ESCI 110 if taken after a college course in Geology, Geography, or Astronomy."

    Class hours: 3.0 Laboratory Prerequisite: A college course in the earth sciences with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher. This course is designed primarily for earth science majors. It includes the use and care of earth science materials with particular reference to the preparation and demonstration of laboratory set-ups. An introduction to stockroom procedures is included. As an alternative, a special project resulting in a report or display on some specific topic is possible. This course may be taken for a maximum of 2 times Transfer Credit: CSU

    Class hours: 3.0 Independent Study A course to provide opportunity for individual research and field projects under the direction of a faculty member in a given department. With the guidance of the faculty member, students prepare and carry out a written learning agreement describing the purposes and outcomes of the project. Students should expect to meet with the supervising faculty member one to two hours each week for conferences. Credit is based upon the number of hours in the semester expected to complete the project (1 unit for 54 hours, 2 units for 108 hours). This course may be taken a maximum of 2 times.
